BENGE - HARMUNA

'Harmuna' is intended as a companion piece to the previous work by Benge entitled 'Abstraxa'. The five compositions featured on 'Harmuna' were similarly realised on the Buchla modular synthesiser. For more information on the specific system and modules used please refer to the notes accompanying the 'Abstraxa' release which can be found here: zackdagoba.bandcamp.com/album/abstraxa.

If Abstraxa was an exploration of the distant reaches of the sound universe, Harmuna is a journey in the opposite direction, inverting the mind’s eye and exploring the infinite space within; Harmuna - Exploring the Inner Reaches.

The synthesiser was set up in such a way that harmonious tone-waves were layered upon themselves and rhythmic patterns built up to form the various pieces. The resulting tone poems can be experienced in various ways, for example as meditative deep-listening (i.e. with headphones) or in the background to serve as an ambient aural setting.

JOHN FOXX AND THE MATHS - THE SHAPE OF THINGS

The second John Foxx And The Maths album, 'The Shape Of Things' (released 19/3/2012) was recorded and mixed at Benge’s studio in London. Like the debut album 'Interplay', it’s the sound of analogue synthesizers and drum machines – and on one track, feedbacking guitars played by Foxx himself. Although there’s a raw edge to the likes of ‘Falling Down’ and ‘Talk’, this album is arguably more reflective and emotional than Interplay. Though not overtly auto-biographical, there’s a sense of looking back over a life and exploring feelings of loss over opportunities and lovers missed; possible futures that will remain unlived. The limited edition release of the album is in hard-back deluxe artwork by Interplay designer Jonathan Barnbrook and includes a bonus CD of remixes.

BENGE - ABSTRAXA

'Abstraxa' is the latest release by Benge and on this download only mini-album he explores the outer reaches - using the Buchla Electronic Music Box. The six compositions featured on 'Abstraxa' were all realised on a Buchla modular synthesiser. Donald Buchla began making electronic musical instruments in 1963, developing the first Buchla 100 series systems in conjunction with the San Francisco Tape Music Center. Don Buchla is still developing and manufacturing his modular systems, using the same module format (now 200e series) that he introduced 50 years ago. The pieces presented were recorded to tape using overdubbing in places, additional reverberation and delay lines were also incorporated into the system.

BENGE – LOOP SERIES

'Loop Series' is the second mini-album released by Benge this month and for the very first time (as far as Benge releases go) the format is cassette tape. The four compositions on 'Loop Series' are all quite naturally, completely synthesised recordings and can best be described as abstract in form. The 'Loop Series' was recorded by Benge last year using some very early modular systems. 'Loop Series' is released by Chemical Tapes, and you can buy it and read reviews at Norman Records and Stashed Goods.

THE BENGE AND JOHN FOXX CONNECTION

Benge is currently involved in a much talked about musical project together with John Foxx. The name of the project? John Foxx And The Maths and the debut album entitled ‘Interplay’ has since its release received nothing but critical acclaim.

The album release has been followed by a string of live performances, interviews as well as other productive artistic collaborations.

The latest being a visual collaboration with designer Jonathan Barnbrook. He was not only responsible for the artwork of the Interplay album but has also produced live visuals during John Foxx And The Maths’ many sets since the debut album release.

sparkle plenty

NEW CATHODE ALBUM - SPARKLE PLENTY

Sparkle Plenty, the second album from Cathode - Steve Jefferis, from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is out on 20th April 2009

Special Measures Cathode's debut album, was released by Expanding Records in 2004, the album was acclaimed for its winning combination of precision-glitch electronics and a warm melodic sensibility, gaining the judgement of "first class" from John Peel.

Steve has been spending his time since the debut album working on other music and film projects. These include membership of The Matinee Orchestra, Tyneside's pastoral-acoustic ensemble who released an acclaimed debut album on Isan's Arable record label; and the Warm Digits, a guitar- noise/electronics/free-improvisation collaboration with the Matinee Orchestra's Andrew Hodson.

Steve's day job as a clinical psychologist has some oblique influences on the new record. The title 'Sparkle Plenty' comes from developmental psychologist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist Daniel Stern's work on infant development. "Sparkle Plenty" is his phrase for children whose way of coping with caregivers who are unresponsive or depressed is to sparkle - with lots of smiles, activity and excitement, that masks the child's authentic (possibly much lonelier) emotional state. It's an apposite title for the record; Cathode's music has always been unashamedly about creating something beautiful, which acts to sweeten something that's much more melancholy underneath.
